«Un regard sur l'accueil fait aux Elégies dans les années 20 s'impose. On constate avec étonnement que les interprétations divergent d'une manière extrême : les uns, tous ceux qui sont proches de Rilke, admirent la continuité, autrement dit, la victoire de Rilke sur le "temps funeste" de la grande guerre. C'est comme si les Elégies avaient guéri la plaie créée par la catastrophe historique. D'autres s'offusqueront du fait que le monument rilkéen ne porte aucune trace de la déchirure du monde occidental.
D'autres encore, notamment la génération perdue de la guerre, allaient considérer, en dépit des faits, les Elégies comme l'expression majeure de cette crise aiguë de l'histoire. C'est ainsi que la Sixième Elégie (L'élégie du héros), pourtant rédigée dans sa majeure partie dès 1912/1913 (à Duino, Ronda et Paris), enfanta l'image d'un Rilke "héroïque" cristallisant les expériences de la guerre. "La tessiture primitive de l'âme" (Urtext der Seele), la grande scène des archétypes, le théâtre intérieur de Rilke se heurtèrent donc bien aux discours idéologiques de l'époque dont parlait Musil.
Rilke "apolitique" et "atemporel" ? Même si une interprétation de l'oeuvre comme miroir de son temps peut paraître inadaptée, il faut néanmoins tenir compte du fait que les Elégies et les Sonnets posent la question de l'être humain à l'époque du nihilisme. Les difficultés du texte viennent essentiellement du fait que tous les systèmes d'orientation traditionnels et identifiables ont disparu du texte.
"Etrange de voir ainsi que tout ce qui se rattachait, librement vole de ci de là, dans l'espace sans lien" (Première Elégie). Tout ce qui est dit du positionnement des morts peut être mis en relation avec la situation de l'homme après l'annonce par Nietzsche de la mort de Dieu. Il s'agit d'une tentative extrême de trouver la place de l'homme - son temps et son lieu ("emplacement, site, gîte, sol, domicile", Dixième Elégie).
Les Elégies sont l'une des grandes manifestations de l'expérience de la "solitude" (Nietzsche) et de l'absence d'un "chez-soi transcendantal" (Lukacs, La théorie du roman).» Gerald Stieg.
